Project goal

More than 21 million people worldwide have been diagnosed with schizophrenia. Treatments with medication and psychosocial support are usually used and considered effective. However, more than 50% of persons with schizophrenia do not receive appropriate care, according to WHO. 4 forms of coercive interventions have been usually used for handling crisis in cases of schizophrenia: Seclusion; Mechanical Restraint; Physical Restraint; Involuntary Medication Administering/Chemical Restraint. According to existing policies, regulations and trends, the use of coercive measures is currently being reduced at mental health settings internationally. However, the question remains – what happens in domiciliary environments..? This project has been launched with the main objective of increasing competences (attitudes, knowledge, and skills) of persons experiencing schizophrenia, their relatives/carers and mental health professionals. It aims to explore the potential ways for handling schizophrenia related crisis in domiciliary environments through the use of strategies alternative to coercion.
