About the Project
Domestic violence, mental health difficulties, and disability are closely intertwined, yet these intersections in Lithuania often remain unnoticed, as if this complex overlap was invisible. For women experiencing domestic violence, the risk of having mental health conditions increases at least threefold, while women with mental health conditions or disabilities are at significantly higher risk of experiencing violence.
Insufficiently sensitive services and the weak capacity of NGOs and various professionals to recognise this intersection mean that women experiencing multiple harms do not receive appropriate, accessible, and complex support.
The project aims to strengthen the capacities of regional NGOs and to develop trauma-and violence-informed, integrated services for women at the intersection of domestic violence, mental health difficulties, and disability.
The project’s target groups are regional NGO staff and volunteers working directly with women and communities, as well as women themselves who experience violence and mental health difficulties and/or disability. Also, mental health service providers and professionals from Specialised Complex Support Centres (SKPC).
The project seeks to enable regional NGOs to better recognise the intersections between domestic violence, mental health, and disability, adapt their services to women’s individual needs, strengthen collaboration between regional NGOs, address stigma within communities, and provide women with empowering knowledge and skills to help them better identify violence, defend their rights, and seek help. It also aims to strengthen the cooperation among NGOs and with mental health service providers and SKPC.
The results will be achieved through capacity-building workshops, improvement, adaptation, and piloting of NGOs’ emotional support services, mentorship, inter-institutional exercises, an informational awareness-raising campaign, and group-based, experiential, and creative therapeutic activities for women.
