Access to Justice – International Conference in Madrid 06.17

Spain: A European Leader for Inclusive Justice and Fair Trials rights for Defendants with Intellectual and Psychosocial Disabilities
Based on data from the ENABLE project, Spain stands out as a leader in ensuring that individuals with intellectual and psychosocial disabilities receive necessary procedural accommodations in criminal proceedings. Indeed, 85% of Spanish interviewees – persons with disabilities, national human rights institutions representatives and criminal justice professionals – mentioned making procedural accommodations for defendants during proceedings, demonstrating the country’s commitment to inclusion.
Several forms of accommodations have been observed, such as:
- Facilitators
- Support persons
- Easy-to-understand communication
- Easy-to-read documentation
These significant advances have been enabled in Spain due to progressive national strategies and legislation.
Join us for the Access to Justice Conference on June 17, 2024, to learn more about the promising practices on procedural accommodations for persons with intellectual and psychosocial disabilities. The event, co-organized by Plena Inclusion and the Validity Foundation, will feature many key players in the field who will discuss this and other similarly important issues.
Join the event in person in Madrid or online. The conference will be held in English and Spanish. Participation is free.
